Photoluminescent Aggregates
These photoluminescent aggregates glow naturally in the dark. They are ideal for marking pedestrian paths, illuminating pool surrounds or highlighting stair nosings. Let your imagination run free to create original, decorative and safer outdoor spaces.
They absorb energy from all types of light sources. They fully recharge after just a few minutes of exposure and then gradually release this stored energy as a phosphorescent glow, remaining visible for several hours in the dark.
Depending on the colour, these glowing aggregates can remain visible for up to a full night:
- Green : highest brightness
- Turquoise : medium brightness
- Blue : lower brightness
Photoluminescent Aggregates for Stone Carpet
Photoluminescent aggregates are designed to provide excellent long-term durability. Their composition makes them resistant to frost, high temperatures, water, chemicals and vehicle traffic.
Their photoluminescent properties remain effective for approximately 10 years. Completely self-sufficient, the aggregates recharge naturally through daylight and require no electricity or additional power source.
Luminescent Properties
During the day, the aggregates have a colourless to slightly yellowish appearance. In complete darkness, they glow in blue, green or turquoise, depending on the selected colour.
The duration and intensity of the phosphorescent effect mainly depend on the level of ambient darkness. The darker the surroundings, the more visible the photoluminescent aggregates will be.
Although they emit light, their glow may be less noticeable where there is significant ambient lighting. To fully enjoy their luminous effect throughout the night, they should therefore be used in an environment with as little surrounding light as possible.
In urban areas with street lighting, on full-moon nights or in other illuminated areas, the glow of the aggregates will be significantly less visible.
The afterglow depends on the colour, exposure time and temperature. Depending on the aggregate colour and charging conditions, the luminous effect can remain visible for approximately 4 to 10 hours. The darker the environment, the stronger and longer-lasting the phosphorescent effect.
- Green: highest brightness
- Turquoise: medium brightness
- Blue: lower brightness
Please refer to the technical data sheet for detailed luminance information for each colour.
How Do Photoluminescent Aggregates Work?
Photoluminescent aggregates, also known as phosphorescent aggregates, glow-in-the-dark aggregates or luminous aggregates, are made from ceramic glass and contain rare-earth compounds based on strontium aluminates, known for their excellent light-storage properties.
After exposure to a natural or artificial light source – with optimum charging achieved under sunlight, white light or UV light – the aggregates absorb energy and gradually release it in the form of phosphorescence.
This phenomenon allows them to glow in the dark without electricity or batteries.
Applications
Photoluminescent aggregates can be incorporated into a wide variety of decorative surfaces and products:
- All types of decorative concrete, including exposed aggregate, bush-hammered, sandblasted and polished concrete
- Resin-bound surfaces, including stone carpet and epoxy resin flooring
- Precast products such as decorative objects, paving blocks, slabs, kerbs and steps
Photoluminescent Aggregates for Stone Carpet
For stone carpet, we recommend using:
- Broadcast application : 300 g of photoluminescent aggregates per 25 kg bag of marble aggregates, broadcast over the surface before smoothing.
- Mixed into the aggregate : 1 kg of photoluminescent aggregates per 25 kg bag of marble aggregates.
Other Uses
As they are completely waterproof and non-toxic, these photoluminescent aggregates can also be used for submerged decorative applications, such as aquariums and ornamental fountains.
