Masters PU UV Resin

Masters PU UV Resin is a high performance polyurethane binder for stone carpets. It is a 1-component, 100% solids, medium viscosity, hard-elastic alifatic polyurethane binder used for so-called "draining" coatings such as stone carpets. It allows the realization of draining soils (on perfectly stabilized grounds) or semi-draining on existing slabs. Does not yellow. It can be used for external (balcony, terraces...) as well as internal use (verandas, rooms with a lot of window-glass...).

Description

Masters PU UV Resin – High-Performance Polyurethane Resin for Stone Carpet

Masters PU UV Resin is a high-performance, single-component polyurethane resin specially designed as a binder for stone carpet and resin-bound marble aggregate flooring.

This clear, solvent-free resin is 100% aliphatic polyurethane, providing excellent UV resistance and preventing yellowing when exposed to sunlight. Thanks to its high mechanical resistance, it is particularly suitable for both indoor and outdoor decorative flooring applications.

Masters PU UV Resin can be used to create permeable or semi-permeable stone carpet surfaces, depending on the substrate and installation method. It is ideal for terraces, patios, pool surrounds, pathways, balconies and tree surrounds.

The cured membrane withstands temperatures ranging from -40°C to +80°C.

Advantages of a single-component polyurethane resin

Unlike two-component resins, Masters PU UV Resin is supplied ready to use and does not require the mixing of a resin and hardener.

Its main advantages include:

  • Easy application: no mixing between two components is required.
  • Time-saving: quick and straightforward preparation before application.
  • Reduced waste: unused resin can be kept for later use when the container is properly resealed.
  • Excellent UV resistance: its 100% aliphatic formulation prevents yellowing caused by sunlight.
  • High mechanical resistance: suitable for demanding decorative flooring applications.
  • Long storage life: up to 12 months in its original unopened packaging under suitable storage conditions.

Stone Carpet Application

Stone carpet must be installed on a suitable draining substrate or on a surface with sufficient falls to allow proper water drainage.

1. Substrate preparation

Concrete slab

New concrete must be at least 28 days old before application. The substrate must be sound, stable and free from cracks, with a minimum resistance of 1.5 MPa.Clean the surface thoroughly using a pressure washer and allow it to dry completely.

On concrete substrates, a wet-on-wet application is also possible. In this case, Masters PU UV Resin can be used as a primer at approximately 200–300 g/m², working progressively as the stone carpet is installed.

Existing tiles

The tiled substrate must be sound, stable and free from cracks or any material that could affect adhesion. Thoroughly clean and degrease the surface to remove grease, paint, adhesive residues, dust and other contaminants. Apply a suitable bonding primer before installing the stone carpet.

2. Preparing and applying the stone carpet

The substrate must be perfectly clean and dry before application.

Mix approximately 1 kg of Masters PU UV Resin with one 25 kg bag of washed and dried 2.5–5 mm marble aggregates, corresponding to approximately 4% resin by weight.

Mix the resin and aggregates thoroughly for at least 2 minutes, using a clean concrete mixer or a large mixing bucket with a professional mixer.

Spread the mixture evenly over the substrate. For standard stone carpet applications, an approximate thickness of 10 mm is recommended. Use a levelling screed or guide rails to achieve a regular and even surface.

The mixture must then be thoroughly compacted and smoothed using a manual or mechanical finishing trowel to obtain a dense, uniform finish.

Any existing movement or expansion joints in the substrate must be maintained through the finished flooring.

Allow the surface to cure for approximately 24 to 48 hours.

Specific Applications

Tree surrounds : Remove approximately 20 cm of soil and fill with around 15 cm of 6/10 mm gravel. Compact thoroughly before applying approximately 5 cm of stone carpet using aggregates with a minimum particle size of 5/8 mm.

Vertical surfaces : Masters PU UV Resin can also be used for vertical stone carpet applications with the addition of a suitable thixotropic additive.

Application Tips

  • For outdoor stone carpet installations, a UV-resistant aliphatic polyurethane resin is particularly recommended. Standard epoxy resins may yellow when exposed to UV radiation over time.
  • For installation over a concrete slab, 2.5–5 mm marble aggregates provide a good balance between appearance, application and comfort.
  • Rounded marble aggregates are generally easier to smooth and provide a more comfortable finished surface than crushed aggregates.
  • During application, regularly lubricate the finishing trowel with a suitable release agent to prevent the resin-bound aggregates from sticking to the tool.
  • Aluminium edging profiles can also be used to achieve clean edges, ensure consistent levels and create decorative patterns or different coloured areas.
